“Therefore encourage one another and build
each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”
– 1 Thessalonians 5:11
You are thinking about counseling, but…
Maybe you’re not sure that secular counseling will be right for you.
Your faith is an integral part of your life, and you feel it needs to be part of the conversation. It’s understandable if you don’t want to “explain” why something is important to you or explain why you feel it involves a spiritual perspective.
You don’t want to be judged.
We feel as Christians we should know better, do better. We’re certainly trying to live more Christ-like, but we fall short like everyone else. We would hope that other Christians should understand this better than anyone, but they can be just as judgmental as anyone! You wonder, “Will I be looked down on for having these thoughts or feelings?”
And you don’t want secular advice that may steer you away from your values. Christians believe that Christ is our creator, and we strive to follow His will, not our own. Our moral compass is God’s word, while cultural morality changes over time. You want to be sure that the guidance you’re given is in line with God’s word.
You’re looking for a place that can help you grow closer to God…
… not further away. But the current culture can sometimes make that difficult to do.
Culture today is very “me” centered: “You deserve more!” is a common theme amongst advertisements. “Do whatever makes you happy” is common advice on many media platforms. “Look at me!” is what you see all over social media.
Yet Christians are called to love God first, to love others above themselves. “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” (Romans 12:10)
Christian counseling helps you as a believer to align yourself to your faith, which in turn helps you know Him more and understand His purpose for you.
Your needs lead the way…
What’s important to you is what leads us.
Some people come to a Christian place because there is an inherent trust, or a similar moral compass (but they don’t want to be preached to).
Some people want to understand certain scripture as it applies to them or to be held accountable to their faith.
Still others just want to know that we “speak the same language” and be able to freely discuss their struggles in the context of their values. I can speak to that full range of needs.
As a Christian counseling practice, I am committed to helping your spiritual life develop and enable you to understand Biblical truth and apply it to your life.
Christians strive to live according to God’s will…
… knowing that when we are following His plan, that is when we are most fruitful! However, knowing how to apply this is often confusing.
One way I see Christians struggle is in the application of scriptural understanding to their lives specifically. For example, a person might feel they “shouldn’t be anxious” because the Bible says so, and so they suffer in not only the inability to escape anxiety, but also in their “failure” to follow God’s word.
In therapy, we might examine those “should and shouldn’t” thoughts and discover how they are interfering. We will also examine not just what God says about anxiety, but why, and what that looks like in real-life application.
“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10
Christian counseling ties together the principles of science (evidence-based theory and techniques) with the awe of our Creator as a loving and graceful God who provided us His word (the Bible), an example of how to live (Jesus), and relationship with one another to live out the purpose He planned specifically for you.
No matter who you are or where you come from…
I invite you to consider Christian counseling.
For some, “Christian” is a loaded term – a false label – a reason to run in the other direction from past bad experiences with people who call themselves Christian. I get it.
But rest assured: I am not here to preach to you, shame you, convert you, or label you in any way. I strive to make my office safe and welcoming for everyone, regardless of background, circumstances, culture, or beliefs.
Whether you call yourself Christian now or in the past…
Whether you’ve just grown up Christian but you’re not quite sure of your own individual beliefs…
Or whether you aren’t a religious person at all…
I am here to meet your needs.
